For Jay Toups, The In-Between is not a documentation of places, but a meditation on endurance and solitude. Over ten months and more than 15,000 miles from Florida to the Arctic Ocean, Jay traversed the continent like a pilgrim of the image, guided not by maps, but by instinct. He crossed abandoned gold rush roads, river fords, landslides, and the invisible boundaries that separate comfort from wildness.

What he sought was not adventure for its own sake, but the possibility of seeing differently: of reclaiming the raw, unfiltered gaze of those who once ventured into the unknown guided only by intuition and desire.

Each photograph in this series becomes the residue of a lived moment, a pause between exhaustion and revelation. There are no staged compositions, no idealized wilderness.
